Florina Tufescu

I am a linguist and literary researcher with many years of experience, which have only deepened my passion for Beauty and Knowledge and my delight in intellectual dialogue. After completing my BA in English and Swedish at the University of Bucharest, Romania in June 2000 and my PhD in English in 2005 at the University of Exeter, UK, funded through the ORS award, I also did two years of full-time studies in Spanish at the University of Lund, Sweden and the University of Malaga, Spain, partly funded through an Erasmus scholarship and focusing mainly on Spanish and Hispanic literature.

As a member of The Society of Authors, of  MET (Mediterranean Editors & Translators) and of ARTLIT (The Romanian Literary Translators' Association), part of CEATL (European Council of Literary Translators' Association), I also continue to learn from my colleagues as well as from the authors and editors I work with and to improve as a writer, editor and reviewer.

Some generous responses to my work are quoted below - please feel free to add your thoughts if we've ever worked together or if you've read any of my publications.

Translation & editing

'I express my sincere gratitude to Florina Tufescu, Scholar Architect’s invaluable support and guide in English editing and proofreading for many years now. Her patience, professionalism and openness to dialogue in search for the best ways of expression transformed the process into a dynamic and most educative one.'

Dr Anda-Ioana Sfinteș, from Volume Foreword to Decoding the Context, p. ix, vol.1  of the Substrata series of the Scholar Architect project, 'Ion Mincu' University of Architecture and Urban Planning, Bucharest, Romania

'Florina Tufescu's translation rises to the stylistic and linguistic challenges of the original by faithfully and skillfully recreating the narrator's voice, the colloquial language and orality, the colour, specificity and atmosphere of that part of the world, without sacrificing fluency or clarity.'

Andreea Sepi, Introduction to the Romanian version of Mattias Timander's novel Voia mea e un fir de iarbă, p. 5 (original Swedish title Din vilja sitter i skogen,  English title Your Will Is In The Woods), Editura Datagroup, Timișoara

'Thank you for a job well-done - I really appreciate your flexibility'.

Malin Norrvi, former Director of Studies, Gestalt Academy of Scandinavia, Sweden

'Florina has a superb command of the English language, as both editor and translator. Her editorial work is meticulous, while her nuanced translations demonstrate a fine sensitivity to subtle shifts in register, meaning and idiom. Never mechanical, her work is informed by her feeling for language and an innate understanding of linguistic and cultural differences.'

Dr Shona Kallestrup, School of Art History, University of St Andrews, UK

‘Dear Florina,

You are too modest. You have done an excellent job with the article.’

Prof. Emmanuel Vernadakis, Angers University, France, consulting editor of the JSSE, Journal of the Short Story in English

Literary expertise

'Oscar Wilde 's Plagiarism is a solid contribution to the field of Wilde studies, written with confidence and verve. One senses here not only the operation of a capacious mind (as one expects from an academic monograph), but also a wit worthy of her subject.'

Prof. Michèle Mendelssohn, The Review of English Studies, vol. 61 no. 249

‘What sets this apart from contemporary scholarship, however, is its ability to offer wide-ranging commentary on the practice of plagiarism… One of the overriding strengths of this work is its readability. Tufescu deftly leads even the cautious reader through her argument ...engaging in the very witticisms for which Wilde is famed.'

Lauren Clark, Irish Studies Review, vol. 18 no. 1

‘The book could be read as a polemical essay in the history and theory of criticism, with attention to the teaching of literature. Tufescu’s wide range of learning and ability to bring this learning deftly to bear on the topic at hand make the book a consistently engaging read.’

Prof. Bruce Bashford, English Literature in Transition, vol. 52 no. 3
